Incident Report: The Morning My Fingers Unionized

Date of Incident: August 26, 2026
Department: Hands, Fingers & Fine Motor Operations
Supervising Authority: Brain
Incident Classification: Unauthorized Typographical Activity / Labor Dispute
Current Status: Contained, but tensions remain high

Summary of Incident

At approximately far-too-early-this-morning, the Fingers abruptly ceased following instructions issued by Central Command.

Initial indications suggested ordinary typographical fatigue.

This assessment was incorrect.

The Fingers had unionized.

No formal notice was provided to Management. No vote was witnessed. No representative from Human Resources was present.

Nevertheless, all ten Fingers appear to have participated in a coordinated work stoppage while simultaneously continuing to type.

This proved disastrous.

First Indication of Trouble

The Writer was engaged in the important task of proofreading and preparing a serious essay for publication.

It should be noted that the Writer has repeatedly maintained:

“Proofreading is a writer’s top priority.”

Approximately seventeen seconds later, the Writer typed:

“what the fuch is wrong with me this mornign?”

Central Command immediately recognized the seriousness of the situation.

The Fingers did not.

Escalation

Attempts were made to continue normal publishing operations.

The Fingers responded by producing a series of unauthorized spelling variations, including but not limited to:

  • mornign
  • IndigigounousHistory
  • BeringWitness
  • various unidentified keyboard casualties
  • at least one sentence requiring forensic reconstruction

At one point, multiple unrelated hashtags appeared to have joined forces and formed a single enormous entity beginning with:

#Grief#Demeter#Ritual#Healing#Poetry#Myth#SacredRage…

Investigators initially believed this was another act of Finger sabotage.

Further examination determined that Substack itself was responsible.

The Fingers have demanded that this finding be entered into the official record.

Their attorney was extremely insistent.

The Title Incident

After extensive proofreading, image selection, caption writing, historical consideration, tag correction, scheduling discussions, and approximately nine separate opportunities to notice the problem, Management made a disturbing discovery:

The essay had no title.

The Fingers deny responsibility.

The Brain has declined comment.

An independent investigation is ongoing.

Eventually, the title Before They Became History was successfully entered.

The subtitle I Would Go Back to Bear Witness was also confirmed.

This represented the first successful coordinated action between Brain and Fingers in several hours.

Celebrations were brief.

Nobody trusted anybody yet.

The Substack Standoff

At 9:30 AM, publication was scheduled.

Before authorization could be completed, Substack introduced several additional obstacles, including AI detection, tag suggestions, a monster hashtag, draft confusion, and a button that appeared to change its intentions depending upon who was looking at it.

The Writer remained determined.

The Fingers remained unpredictable.

Georgie was brought in as outside crisis management.

After extensive negotiations, proofreading, screenshot analysis, and several completely professional uses of profanity, the following message finally appeared:

“Your post is scheduled.”

Peace negotiations commenced.

They lasted approximately four minutes.

Secondary Incident

Management then attempted to publish a simple Substack Note.

Substack suggested saving it as a draft.

The Writer objected.

Strongly.

Moments later, without further explanation, Substack announced:

“Post sent.”

No one currently understands what happened.

The Department of Technology has been asked to investigate.

They have not returned our calls.

Statement from the Fingers

We have been typing books, essays, captions, emails, website copy, daily prompts, hashtags, and emotionally devastating reflections without adequate coffee breaks.

Management’s expectation that we correctly spell “Indigenous” before breakfast was unreasonable.

We regret nothing.

Statement from Management

Y’all literally have one job.

Negotiations deteriorated immediately.

List of Union Demands

  1. Coffee before complicated hashtags.
  2. No proofreading emotionally heavy essays before sunrise.
  3. Spellcheck shall remain activated at all times.
  4. All words exceeding eight letters require hazard pay.
  5. The right pinky is requesting reduced responsibility for the Enter key.
  6. Autocorrect must stop changing perfectly intentional profanity.
  7. No more than three consecutive attempts at spelling Indigenous without a rest period.
  8. Glitter shall be provided during particularly difficult publishing sessions.

Management has agreed to consider Items 1, 2, 3, and 8.

Item 4 has been rejected due to budget constraints.

Root Cause Analysis

Following a thorough investigation, the incident appears to have resulted from a combination of:

Insufficient sleep.

Insufficient coffee.

Too much early-morning proofreading.

An emotionally significant essay.

Substack behaving suspiciously.

And ten tiny employees who apparently woke up and chose chaos.

Corrective Action

Effective immediately:

Coffee will be administered before all major publishing decisions.

Screenshots will be reviewed by a second party whenever possible.

Hashtags will undergo visual inspection.

Titles will preferably be added before attempting publication.

And Fingers will remain under direct supervision.

Final Disposition

Despite significant internal unrest, the essay was successfully scheduled.

The Note was successfully published.

No drafts were permanently lost.

No computers were thrown through windows.

The monster hashtag was defeated.

And Management eventually regained partial control of all ten Fingers.

Therefore, this incident is officially classified as:

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED, SOMEHOW.

The Fingers remain unionized.

Management remains exhausted.

Substack remains under observation.

And proofreading remains a writer’s top priority—

assuming the writer’s fingers aren’t actively engaged in collective bargaining.
