Perhaps you’re awake before the rest of the house.

I wanted to leave a little company here for either kind of quiet.

I don’t have a tidy thought to offer. There are things I haven’t figured out, and sometimes I grow tired of trying to arrange them into something I can explain.

You can come in without knowing what to say.

There are hours when “How are you?” feels like a much bigger question than anyone intended. Where would we even begin? With the thing that made us laugh? Whatever is still on our minds? The part we would rather leave alone for a while?

If you’ve come by with a long story, there is room for it. If all you have is “It’s been a day,” I can sit with that, too.

I like to imagine two chairs on a porch, a light near the door, and a conversation allowed to wander. A few words. A comfortable pause. Something ordinary that makes us both laugh, even with everything else still going on.

We can sit here a moment without turning the day into a story.

Whether you are setting something down or gathering yourself to begin, I’m glad you stopped by.

That is about the size of what I have to offer: a few words, a place to pause, and a familiar light whenever you happen to arrive.

One Quiet Question

What would feel kind in this quiet part of your day?

There is room for you here.

The porch light is on.
