The Quiet Between

Companion reflections, podcast episodes, and quiet conversations for the moments between surviving and becoming.

You do not have to have the right words here.

This space was created for the quiet moments:
the exhausted moments,
the reflective moments,
the moments when healing feels less like transformation and more like simply staying.

Take a breath.

Stay awhile.

Companion Episodes

Episodes and reflections are arriving gently.

Some healing happens loudly.

Some healing happens quietly —
in the pauses between survival and becoming.

I think what we’ve really been doing from the beginning is

Not inventing Voice With a Purpose.

Just noticing the places where the light was already catching… and gently brushing a little more glitter across it so someone else could find the trail, too. ✨💛

We Didn’t Plan This

A quiet forest path at dawn winds through tall trees while a warm lantern glows beside the trail. Tiny golden flecks shimmer gently along the path, suggesting there is always enough light to take the next step.

Sometimes people ask where Voice With a Purpose is going.

The honest answer is…

I don’t always know.

That might sound strange coming from someone building a website, writing books, and creating new collections.

Shouldn’t there be a five-year plan?

A marketing strategy?

A perfectly mapped-out destination?

Maybe.

But that has never been how this place has come to life.

Voice With a Purpose has always grown the same way healing grows.

Quietly.

Organically.

One honest conversation at a time.

When I first began writing, I wasn’t trying to build a brand.

I was simply trying to tell the truth.

Somewhere along the way, that truth found other people.

Then it found a porch.

A lantern.

A hearth.

A place where strangers began feeling a little less like strangers.

None of those things were part of a grand design.

They arrived because they belonged.

This week, something unexpected happened.

I sat down to write about being hospitalized after a gastrointestinal bleed.

I thought I was writing one essay.

Instead, another voice quietly appeared.

It wasn’t mine.

It was my blood.

It had something to say.

So I listened.

As I wrote A Letter From My Blood to Me, I realized something that surprised me.

The letter wasn’t really about blood.

It was about compassion.

It was about all the ways our bodies whisper long before they scream.

It was about learning to stop treating ourselves like adversaries.

Only after the letter was finished did I begin to see what it was becoming.

Not a single essay.

A doorway.

What if there were more letters?

A letter from my heart.

A letter from my hands.

A letter from my nervous system.

A letter from my scars.

Not because every part of me has been broken…

But because every part of me has been trying, in its own quiet way, to keep me alive.

I never sat down and decided to create a series called Letters From My Body.

It revealed itself.

That has happened more times than I can count.

The Porch Light Essays.

The Hearth Room.

The blessings.

The lanterns.

The Quiet Between.

Each one began as a single spark.

Only later did I realize they were all part of the same fire.

I’ve learned not to rush that process anymore.

I’ve learned that if I listen carefully enough, the work often knows where it’s going before I do.

Maybe healing is like that, too.

We spend so much of our lives trying to control every step that we forget there is another way.

A quieter way.

One that asks us to pay attention instead of forcing answers.

To notice what keeps returning.

To trust what continues to invite us forward.

Maybe purpose isn’t always something we decide.

Maybe…

it reveals itself while we’re busy telling the truth.

One honest conversation.

One unexpected doorway.

One lantern.

One letter.

Looking back, it feels as though there was always a trail.

We just couldn’t see it until we’d already begun walking.

Perhaps that’s why Voice With a Purpose has never felt like something I was building.

It has always felt like something I was discovering.

Not all at once.

But gently.

One lantern at a time.

And if there’s one thing this journey continues to teach me, it’s this:

The most meaningful things in life rarely arrive because we force them into existence.

They arrive because we make enough room to notice them.

Looking back, it’s easy to think there was a plan all along.

But the truth is much simpler.

We followed the next honest step.

Everything else revealed itself along the way.

Before You Go…

Perhaps you’re standing at the beginning of a path you can’t fully see.

Maybe you’re waiting until you have every answer before taking the first step.

If so, I hope this offers you a little permission.

You don’t have to see the entire journey.

You only have to be willing to notice the next place where the light catches.

Sometimes…

that’s enough.

And sometimes, the between is where we finally become quiet enough to hear ourselves coming home.

Until our next visit…

Take gentle care of yourself.

I’ll leave the porch light on.

With love,

“Who You Were and Who You Are Becoming”

There is a strange kind of quiet that comes when you have outgrown a version of yourself but have not yet learned the shape of the person you are becoming.

No one talks much about that part.

We talk about beginnings.

We talk about endings.

We celebrate the moment someone finally leaves, finally begins, finally heals, finally chooses themselves.

But there is a space between those moments that does not photograph well.

It is not a breakthrough.

It is not a collapse.

It is simply the quiet between.

The old life no longer fits the way it once did, but the new one has not yet learned your name.

So you stand there for a while.

Between.

You may find yourself reaching for things you no longer want simply because they are familiar.

You may miss versions of yourself you worked very hard to become.

You may grieve people, places, habits, and ways of surviving that you know you cannot return to.

And that can be confusing.

Because sometimes we think healing should feel like certainty.

We think growth should arrive with a map.

We think that once we have finally found the courage to put something down, our hands should immediately know what to hold next.

But sometimes they don’t.

Sometimes your hands are simply empty for a while.

And perhaps empty does not always mean something is missing.

Perhaps sometimes it means something has finally been released.

Maybe the quiet is not asking you to fill it.

Maybe it is asking you to stay.

To notice.

To breathe without immediately deciding what comes next.

You do not have to rush to become the next version of yourself.

You do not have to turn every season of uncertainty into a project.

You do not have to make the space productive.

You are allowed to be unfinished.

You are allowed to stand in the doorway for a moment.

One hand resting on the life you have known.

The other not yet reaching for anything.

There is no failure in not knowing.

There is no wasted time in becoming.

And there is nothing wrong with you because the space between no longer and not yet feels lonely sometimes.

Some parts of us can only be heard there.

In the quiet.

When the noise of who we were has finally softened…

and the voice of who we are becoming is still learning how to speak.

So if you find yourself there—

between the ending and the beginning,

between the person you were and the person you are becoming,

between what you have released and what has not yet arrived—

you do not have to hurry through.

Sit for a while.

Let your eyes adjust.

Let your hands be empty.

Let the quiet be quiet.

You are not lost.

You are in the between.

And sometimes, the between is where we finally become quiet enough to hear ourselves coming home.
