🌙 A Porch Light Essay
For anyone who has spent too long believing they don’t belong.

The Porch Light Is On
Welcome home.
The coffee’s warm.
Take whichever chair feels comfortable.
Let’s visit for a while.
People often ask where we would live if we could choose anywhere in the world.
The answers usually sound like postcards.
A cabin tucked into the mountains.
A cottage beside the sea.
A farmhouse with a wraparound porch.
A quiet little town where everyone knows your name.
For a long time, I thought I was searching for one of those places, too.
But somewhere along the way, I realized I wasn’t really looking for a different address.
I was looking for a feeling.
The feeling that I belonged.
The feeling of finally being able to stop looking over my shoulder.
The feeling of being able to exhale without wondering when the next storm would arrive.
For those of us who grew up where home wasn’t always safe, that longing can follow us into adulthood.
We search for it in cities.
In relationships.
In accomplishments.
Sometimes we even search for it in versions of ourselves we hope will finally be “enough.”
But I’ve begun to wonder if home isn’t something we find.
Maybe it’s something we slowly build.
A conversation where we don’t have to pretend.
A friendship where silence is comfortable.
A cup of coffee on a quiet morning.
A journal that holds our truth without judgment.
A porch light glowing in the evening because someone hoped we’d come by.
Little by little, those moments begin teaching our hearts something they may have never learned before:
You are safe here.
You are welcome here.
You don’t have to perform to belong here.
These days, if someone asks me where I’d live if I could choose anywhere in the world, I still have places that call to me. I still dream about mountain mornings and front porches where time seems to move a little slower.
But more than a place, I hope for a life.
One where the people I love feel at ease when they walk through my door.
One where kindness is ordinary.
One where laughter comes easily.
One where no one has to earn their seat at the table.
Because I’ve learned something I wish someone had told me years ago.
Home isn’t always where your story begins.
Sometimes…
It’s where you finally learn you were worthy of belonging all along.
Before You Go…
If today’s words felt familiar, I hope they remind you that you’re allowed to create the kind of home your heart has always needed.
Sometimes that home is a place.
Sometimes it’s a person.
And sometimes, with enough patience and gentleness, it becomes the way you carry yourself through the world.
The porch light will be on.
Until our next visit…
Take gentle care of your heart.
I’ll leave the porch light on.
With love,
Casey
Voice With A Purpose
Keep the Porch Light On Between Visits
If these words felt like home…
I’d be honored to leave an occasional letter waiting in your inbox.
Sometimes it’s a new essay.
Sometimes it’s a blessing.
Sometimes it’s simply a reminder that there is still room for you here.
No noise.
No pressure.
Just occasional words waiting for you whenever you need them.
I’ll leave a light on for you between visits.
