The Habit of Coming Back to Myself

What’s one habit that has improved your life the most?

Sometimes the most important journey is the one that leads us back to ourselves.

If I had to name the one habit that has improved my life the most, it would not be something you could track on a calendar.

It would be the habit of coming back to myself.

For a long time, I knew how to show up for everyone else. I knew how to carry, fix, survive, endure, and keep going. But somewhere along the way, I began learning how to show up for me, too.

Sometimes coming back to myself looks like writing.

Sometimes it looks like learning something new.

Sometimes it means admitting I am tired.

Sometimes it means setting a boundary, changing my mind, asking for help, or simply refusing to abandon myself because someone else is disappointed in me.

And sometimes it means beginning again.

I have learned that improving your life does not always happen through one dramatic decision. Sometimes it happens through the quiet habit of returning—again and again—to the person you are still becoming.

I have left myself behind before.

I probably will again.

But now I know the way home.
