A Little Movement, a Little Grace

What are five simple exercises to do at home?

A little movement. A little grace. Permission to begin where you are. 💜

If you had asked me this question years ago, I might have answered differently. These days, living with chronic pain has changed what exercise means to me.

I want more mobility. More moments out of bed. More connection to the meditation and stillness I have missed. I want to feel a little more at home in my body.

Five simple ways to move at home that I would put on a gentle-movement list are:

1. A short walk around the house. There does not have to be a finish line. Sometimes getting up and moving into another room is a beginning.
2. Seated marching. A little movement from a sturdy chair counts, too. Exercise does not always have to happen standing up.
3. Gentle ankle circles. Small movements deserve a place on the list, especially on days when a bigger routine feels out of reach.
4. Opening and closing your hands. We tend to think of exercise as something involving our whole body, but our hands do plenty of work and deserve some attention.
5. Tai chi. This is something I am beginning to explore, including seated options. I am drawn to its slow, intentional movements and the opportunity to bring my attention back to the present.

Of course, a list is only a starting point. With my medical history, what belongs in my own routine needs to fit my limitations and my care team’s guidance.

I am learning to leave room for the body I actually have today. Some days there may be a little more movement. Other days, rest may take up most of the page.

I still get to begin again.

One Quiet Question:
What small act of care feels possible for you today?

There is room for you here—even on the days when you need to take it slowly. The porch light is on.
