Not Every Thought Deserves Your Trust

“Be gentle with your mind”

I used to believe the goal was to stop negative thoughts from happening.

I don’t believe that anymore.

Negative thoughts often arrive quietly. Sometimes they sound like old fears, old criticisms, or old versions of ourselves trying to convince us that nothing has changed. I’ve learned that I don’t have to believe every thought simply because it crosses my mind.

When one shows up now, I try to pause instead of panic. I ask myself, Is this true, or is this an old wound speaking?

Sometimes the answer isn’t immediate, and that’s okay.

The best way I’ve found to deal with negative thoughts isn’t to fight them. It’s to meet them with curiosity instead of shame, acknowledge that they’re there, and then gently choose not to let them make today’s decisions for me.

Healing hasn’t silenced every difficult thought.

It has simply taught me that I get to choose which voice I follow.

  1. Casey, this is such a gentle and powerful reminder. I love the idea that healing doesn’t mean silencing every difficult thought, but learning that we don’t have to follow every one of them.

Pausing and asking, “Is this true, or is this an old wound speaking?” is such a compassionate way to meet ourselves in those moments. Thank you for sharing this.

  2. Thank you so much. 💜 I always appreciate the care and thoughtfulness you bring to these conversations.

I really love the way you reflected on the idea that healing isn’t about silencing every difficult thought. For so long, I believed healing meant those thoughts would simply disappear. Instead, I’ve learned that I can notice them with compassion without letting them decide the direction of my day.

I’m especially grateful that the question, “Is this true, or is this an old wound speaking?” resonated with you. Sometimes that small pause creates just enough space for grace to enter the conversation.

Thank you for continuing to read so deeply and for sharing your reflections. Your comments always leave me with something to think about, and I’m truly grateful you’re here. ❤️
